The Posture of the Possible: How Prayer Fueled Dr. King’s Mission

As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we often reflect on the public marches and the thousands of voices raised for justice. But today, we want to look at a quieter image: Dr. King in prayer.

One of the many challenges Dr. King faced was a significant midnight phone call in 1956, threatening his life and family. This left him feeling fearful and uncertain.

He sat at his kitchen table and prayed; later, recalling experiencing God’s presence like never before. This moment of assurance was the catalyst for his courage. Coretta Scott King wrote, “When Martin stood up from the table, he was imbued with a new sense of confidence, and he was ready to face anything.”

This year’s theme is “Mission Possible 2: Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way.” We believe that building this community and uniting our nation is only possible when we are fueled by the same “soul force” that Dr. King relied on. When we honestly bring our innermost thoughts and fears to God, He hears us and gives us the peace and power to lead with love.

What fears or struggles can you honestly bring before God in prayer today?
